Ocean Waves: A Vintage Quilt Block Review

Hi friends, Trudi here with B‑Tru Quilts. Today I’m sharing one of my favorite vintage blocks — Ocean Waves — along with a little quilt history, a look at how the block has evolved, and the simplified version I designed to avoid those pesky Y‑seams.

Ocean Waves first appeared around 1855, became popular from 1880–1920, and was published in 1894 in Ohio Farmer / Farm & Fireside. In the 1920s, Ruby McKim featured it in the Rural New Yorker, and you can read more about her incredible contributions at quiltershalloffame.net.

My Quilt Plan

• Layout: 10 by 12 blocks

• Total blocks: 120

• Finished quilt size: 80 by 96 inches

• Block size: 8 by 8 inches finished

• Half-square triangles needed: 1080

I am estimating 6 yards of white background fabric and 4 yards of reds
