Easy Layer Cake Lap Quilts: A Quick and Fun Pattern for All Skill Levels - Just Zig - No Zag

Creating a lap quilt can be a delightful project, especially when you have a straightforward pattern that allows for both creativity and speed. With just some yardage and a layer cake, you can make 2 to 3 lap quilts using this quick and easy pattern. Whether you're a seasoned quilter or just starting, this project suits all skill levels perfectly. Additionally, it’s an excellent quick project for creating quilts to donate to your preferred charity!

This pattern is not only quick to cut out and piece together, but it also offers a variety of quilting options. You can choose to do a simple swirl free motion or stick with straight lines using your walking foot. The versatility of this pattern makes it popular among quilters; in fact, Kaidi, who designed this pattern, made her very first quilt with it at just 8 years old!

Why Choose a Layer Cake?

Layer cakes are pre-cut fabric squares that typically measure 10 inches. They come in a variety of colors and patterns, making them an excellent choice for quilters who want to create something beautiful without spending hours cutting fabric. Using a layer cake simplifies the process, allowing you to focus on the fun part—sewing!

Layer cakes shine in this lap quilt pattern because they provide a cohesive look while allowing for a mixture of prints. For instance, a 42-piece layer cake pack can transform into a stunning quilt that showcases your favorite fabrics. You can easily create different designs by mixing and matching squares, ensuring your quilt reflects your style without the hassle of cutting each piece individually.

In this pattern, you will choose 12 of your favorite layer cakes and trim them to 8.5" x 8.5". I typically don't use the lighter fabrics from the pack. If your layer cake doesn't have many light fabrics, you will easily have enough for 3 lap-size quilts, but you can always just make 1 bigger quilt.

Materials Needed

Before you dive into cutting and sewing, gather these essential materials for your project:

  • Layer Cake: 1 pack, depending on how many quilts you want to make (1 pack makes 2-3 quilts).

  • Yardage - 1 yard of background and 1 yard of a darker fabric that coordinates with your layer cake fabric for each lap size quilt.

  • Thread: Choose a color that complements your fabric.

  • Rotary Cutter and Mat: For cutting your fabric pieces.

  • Sewing Machine: A basic machine will work well.

  • Walking Foot or Free Motion Foot: Depending on your quilting style.

  • Batting - 45" x 60"

  • Backing - 45 x 60 - 1.75 yards will work perfectly - no piecing necessary.

With these materials in hand, you’re ready to start your quilting adventure!

Quilting Your Lap Quilt

Now that your quilt top is complete, it's time to quilt it! This is where you can let your creativity shine.

  1. Layer Your Quilt: Lay your backing fabric right side down, then place your batting on top, followed by your quilt top right side up.

  2. Baste the Layers: Use safety pins or basting spray to hold the layers together.

  3. Choose Your Quilting Method: You can either do a simple swirl - free motion or straight lines with your walking foot. Both methods complement this pattern beautifully.

  4. Quilt Away: Start quilting your design, taking your time to ensure even stitches. Many quilters often find that using a simple diagonal line pattern brings out the best in their quilts.

  5. Trim the Edges: After you finish quilting, trim any excess batting and backing fabric.

Finishing Touches

After quilting, it’s time to finish your lap quilt.

  1. Binding: Use your last 5 dark strips of fabric to make the binding

  2. Attach the Binding: Sew the binding to the front edges of your quilt, folding it over to the back and hand-stitching it in place. (or sometimes I sew to the back first and then use a zig zag or other decorative stitch to attach to the front)
